Shredding Horror Story: Stolen Identities

Bobby listened as John explained that his company’s system had been hacked and that a ton of client information was stolen.  He stayed silent as John told him that their accounts were almost wiped out and endlessly apologized that this had happened. Bobby felt waves of emotion— anger, frustration, sadness — rush through him, but he couldn’t form words to express his reaction.

“John, I’ll — wow — I’ll call you back,” you finally managed to say. Hung up the phone and stared at the floor in disbelief. His wife, Julie, walked into the kitchen and noticed him standing there.

“Hey, babe. Who was on the phone?” She shuffled through some mail on the counter.

“That was John from XYZ.”

“Oh, what’d he say?”

“He told me the company got hacked.”

Julie stopped going through the mail and looked up, eyes wide. “What do you mean ‘hacked’?”

“Someone got into their system and stole a lot of money from a bunch of accounts — including ours.”

Julie felt her heart pounding in her chest. “How did they do that? How much did they take? I mean, did they —”

“We’ve got a couple thousand dollars left in the account.” The words burned as they came out of his mouth.

“A couple thousand?! We had 20 years of saving in that account — Our retirement, the kids’ college funds. How -” Julie started sobbing into her hands. The thought of their entire life savings being stolen was too much to handle. Bobby hugged her, still unable to fathom what was happening. “How did this happen?”

“John said the people probably got our information off of our statements and stole our identities to withdraw the money.”

“But how? Don’t they shred that stuff? There isn’t a way to see that kind of information if the statements were shredded, right?”

Something clicked in Bobby’s head. “You right. They probably didn’t shred them. They lost our money because they didn’t protect our information the right way.” He walked back over to the phone.

“What’re you doing?” Julie asked through tears.

“I’m calling John back.” Bobby finally knew how to feel about the situation. He felt furious.

Busting Media Shredding Myths

In a world where you can get any information in seconds just by clicking a few buttons, you’d think that we’d stop believing false ideas about certain industries. That being said, there are a few things about media shredding that need to be set straight. That’s why we’re here to debunk some of the myths people believe about their computers and hard drives.

Software programs erase everything on your hard drive.media shredding

Even the best information-erasing programs don’t get everything off of your hard drive. In the same regard, deleting files doesn’t erase them entirely either. A skilled hacker could still steal your information from your hard drive.

Using magnets erases data.

Back in the day, it was believed that putting a magnet on the side of your hard drive would damage it and erase the data on it. Sorry to break it to you, but that’s no longer the case since hard drives are much more magnet-resistant these days.

Stockpiling your hard drives and computer prevents information theft.

This is a huge media shredding myth! Since many companies don’t have a proper protocol for hard drive destruction, they often stockpile old computers and hard drives in storage rooms. However, just because they’re locked up, it doesn’t mean they can’t be stolen. Plus, a thief will be able to take more information since it’s all in one place.

If you want to protect your personal or business-related information, you need Complete Shredding Solutions. We offer media destruction services, so you can safely get rid of your computers, hard drives, and other non-paper items. We are truly the experts at “Information Elimination.” For more information or to request a quote call us at 516-442-1642.

There’s a social security card, a passport, a birth certificate, countless bank and credit card statements, and more. If you want to be the only “you” out there, you need to protect everything that goes into being you, so follow these tips to protecting your personal identity.

Eliminate Clutter

If you can’t decide what documents should be tucked away for safe keeping, use this guide. You’ll probably be able to get rid of a good amount of the papers lying around your home.

Digitize What You Can

Scan the remaining documents that don’t need to be kept as physical copies onto your computer or external hard drive. Just remember to properly dispose of your electronics the right way if you decide to switch devices.

Keep All Your Personal Identity Documents in One Place

In order keep your personal identity safe and find papers easily later on, you should designate one spot for important documents such as birth/marriage certificates, wills, deeds, etc. You can keep them in a storage box or drawer, but it’s safest to keep them in a lockable, fireproof safe.

At Complete Shredding Solutions, we offer secure paper shredding services to complete destroy any documents you no longer need or want. Five Steps to Take to Handle Identity Theft

One of the scariest discoveries in the world is finding out your identity has been stolen. The typical immediate response is to freak out and begin checking all your finances to see if anything has taken out in your name or taken from your accounts. We wouldn’t blame you for panicking, but it’s important to take the next steps in protecting yourself from further harm. If you become a victim, here’s how you should handle identity theft.

1) Place a Fraud Report on Your Credit Cards

A fraud alert places a red flag on your credit report and alerts lenders and creditors to take extra precautions in verifying your identity before extending you credit. Of the three credit reporting agencies — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion — you only need to contact one since that agency will notify the other two. Obtain a copy of your credit report, check it for fraudulent items, and try to dispute any that you can.

2) Contact Your Company Directly

If you know your credit card was stolen, call your credit card company. If your debit card or checkbook was stolen, call your bank. It’s helpful to have a list of what companies you have accounts with and the direct numbers needed to contact them. Important: Don’t write down passwords or pins — that’s just another way for your information to get stolen.

3) Contact the FTC

Create an Identity Theft Report by first filing an Identity Theft Affidavit with the Federal Trade Commission. You can call them at 1-877-438-4338, 1-866-653-4261, or contact them by mail at 600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington D.C. 20580.

4) File a Police Report

Complete your ID Theft Report by filing a police report at your local precinct, and get a copy of both that report and your FTC Identity Theft Affidavit. This report will help you work with credit reporting agencies and companies the thief may have opened accounts in your name in.

5) Protect Your Social Security Number

Even if you don’t have financial evidence yet, if you think your SSN could have been stolen, call the Social Security Administration at 800-269-0271 and the IRS at 800-829-0433. With your SSN, a thief could attempt to switch your tax refunds or get employment or health insurance in your name, so be proactive in protecting it.

While this is not an end-all, be-all list of steps to take to handle identity theft, you can search the U.S. Department of Justice for more information.

Protect yourself before you become a victim of identity theft, and contact Complete Shredding Solutions for all your document destruction needs in Nassau County, Suffolk County, and NYC. We securely shred your paper and media files to prevent your personal information from falling into the wrong hands. For more information or to schedule a service, call us at 516-442-1642.

What Can I Shred?

When clearing out your home or office, there’s often a question that pops up in your mind — “What can I shred?” When it comes to protecting your personal information, the answer you want to hear to that question is usually, “anything.” And when you use Complete Shredding Solutions, that’s the answer you get. But to give you a more solid idea, here are some of the things you can shred with our shredding services.

What can I shred?what can i shred

Financial Documents

If you don’t need them, you should get rid of them. Financial identity theft is on the rise, so shredding bank statements, tax returns older than seven years, pay stubs, and any other documents you don’t need to hang onto is a good idea.

Medical Records

Medical records can give a person’s name, birthday, social security number, and more. HIPPA violations are taken very seriously, so you should shred all unnecessary medical records to protect your clients and your business.

Hard Drives and Computers

No matter what program you use, skilled hackers can still get information off wiped hard drives and computers. Media destruction is just as important in protecting personal information as paper shredding.

Filing Folders

All of those documents you had lying around were probably stored in filing folders. Clear the clutter, and send them over to our facilities.

Staples and Binder Clips

No, you’re not going to have to sit there and remove all the paper clips, staples, and binder clips from your documents before you have us shred them. Our industrial shredders can handle them without a problem.

If you’re unsure if you can shred certain things, give us a call at 516-442-1624. We offer paper shredding services and media shredding services to meet your needs — no job is too big or small at Complete Shredding Solutions!

Protecting Your Business with Paper Shredding Services

When you open up a business, there are a lot of things you think about — such as security. You’ll probably get good locks on the door and even invest in a security system to protect your business from robbers. What you probably didn’t think of how paper shredding could protect your business from even bigger danger. As a small business, there are plenty of reasons why you need paper shredding services.

Protecting Your Business with Paper Shredding Services

Protect Your Employees

Whenever you hire people to work for your business, you take very personal information from them in order to get them onto your payroll and potentially even perform background checks on them. That paperwork can be stolen at any time — unless it’s shredded.

Protect Your Trade Secrets

Under the Industrial Espionage Act of 1996, you can only sue someone who steals your trade secrets if the documents were kept safely. If that information was thrown into the trash, you can’t file charges, since that information is then considered public property.

Protect Your Clients and Customers

If sensitive information about your clients or customers gets out, you’re past the point of harming your own business — you’re harming their personal lives. And once a business is labeled as one that leaks customer information, there’s very little chance of regaining that trust.

Protect Yourself

If your business leaks client information, you run the risk of getting sued. Court and lawyer fees, not to mention the actual damage fees, can cost you an exorbitant amount of money. If you have client information that falls under any HIPAA, law, financial, or other industry or legal regulations, your best bet is to shred what you no longer need.

Implementing Data Security Policies

When it comes to ensuring your business follows proper data security, your protocol should go a lot farther than simply locking file cabinets and adding firewalls. Everyone in the company needs to understand your data security policies and know the consequences of breaking them in order to fully protect your business. Use these tips to implement data security policies in your business and protect you and your clients.

Be Specific

The more specific and transparent your business’ policies are, the fewer gray areas there will be to make a mistake. Have policies for different aspects of your company, such as a physical security policy, a limited access policy, an incident response policy, an employee training policy, and a firewall policy. Also — this should go without saying — make sure everyone knows and follows those policies.

Train Employees Regularly

In the busy day-to-day, data security policies may get put on the mental back-burner, so hold regular (quarterly or monthly) employee trainings to remind your staff of good practices and easy ways to avoid security mistakes. Your agenda can include password protocol, remote access security, and the proper disposal of documents and equipment.

Monitor Social Media

In certain industries, simply revealing that someone is a client at all is grounds for a security breach and potential lawsuit, especially when that information is revealed online. Make sure your employees understand what is appropriate to post on social media and what isn’t. And don’t assume only younger employees could be guilty of this error — older generations are sometimes more likely to commit social media offenses.

If you need help keeping your business safe from security breaches, contact Complete Shredding Solutions. We offer secure, professional document destruction shred services near me, so information isn’t around to be stolen or mishandled in the first place. For more information or to schedule a service, call us at 516-442-1624.

How to Protect a Child’s Identity

When you hear about identity theft, you usually think of older men and women who find out their identities have been stolen when they receive their credit card bills or tax forms and find discrepancies. Unfortunately, it’s not only adults who have their identities stolen. In order to protect a child’s identity, here’s what you need to know.

How You Usually Discover Child Identity Theft

Usually, most people only discover their child’s identity has been stolen when damage has already been done. For example, when your 15-year-old child gets a call from the IRS about W-2’s someone else filed in his or her name or when he or she goes to apply for college loans and they have an awful credit score because of loans a thief has taken out.

How Your Child’s Identity Gets Stolen

In the technological age we live in, some of your child’s toys or devices may illegally record conversations your child has — especially if they’re knock-off versions from other markets who don’tprotect child's identity have to follow the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. When they’re older, your child could have his or her identity stolen by giving his or her Social Security number out during job fairs.

How to Protect a Child’s Identity from Being Stolen

Above all else, talk to your child about protecting their identities and not giving out his or her social security number. You can suggest he or she not give it out to potential employers until the company is ready to give an official offer. You should also get your child’s credit report regularly to ensure nothing looks out of the ordinary.
